The Web undergoes rapid changes as sites change weekly when new sites are added and deleted. A sample of websites were studied for a year and the results showed that the pages changed by up to 15% per week and, thus, only 50% the pages remained. As websites constantly changed, search engines experienced more difficulty in keeping up with the new content which also increased the costs involved.
Marketers also began to have trouble with their links showing up in search engine listings. One way they could help search engines is to be highly linked to the core by using a combination of both new and stable sites with links from other sites. The need for marketers to generate more traffic to their sites through search engines involves a technique called search engine optimization (SEO).
